Welcome

The Oklahoma After School Association (OKAA) is the state affiliate to the National After School Association (NAA). As a professional membership organization our members join with providers across the nation to enhance the quality of out-of-school experiences for all children and youth.

We work locally to support and advance afterschool and out-of-school time programs across Oklahoma. We offer training, technical assistance, resources and information to help afterschool and out-of-school time professionals in their vital work with children and youth.

Fire Safety!

"play safe! be safe!"

Teaching Safe Behavior: The Challenge of Perception and Cognition

OKAA in partnership with Rainbow Fleet Resource and Referral are excited to announce a free workshop designed especially for public/private school teachers, school-age and childcare professionals, community leaders and other health, safety education professionals.

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for preschool and school age children. Establishing rules, clear standards of behavior, and promoting children’s internalization of these rules are key to reducing injuries, especially among preschool children.  This presentation explores children’s perception of fire, the limits of their ability to understand the potential risk, and the consequences. It provides an effective approach to achieving compliance with safety rules taking into account differences in child temperament, provides detailed examples, and tools to facilitate fire safety in the classroom. The three hour program also addresses the challenges of motivating families and colleagues to address safety concerns and describes an effective approach based on the Health Belief Model and Self-Determination Theory. The workshop is presented by Dr. Robert Cole, Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing at the University of Rochester. Dr. Cole has just recently completed the second of two large Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sponsored studies of the role of parenting, child temperament, compliance and injuries to preschool children.

What will be learned?

  • Effective, developmentally appropriate methods of teaching fire prevention to children (using the play safe! be safe! kit and materials, including a teacher's manual)
  •  How to motivate children and families to change behaviors using the principles of the Health Belief Model of  Behavior Change
  • How vulnerable children are to fire and burn injuries
  •  The surprising frequency of children’s misuse of fire and their distorted perception and limited capacity to understand the potential danger of fire

Workshop participants receive:

A play safe! be safe! kit at no charge for use in their classrooms year after year!

Free subscription to the online play safe! be safe! bulletin—full of fire safety news, tips, creative ways to use the play safe! be safe! kit in the classroom, and additional resources

"After school programs offer children and youth opportunities to learn new skills such as conflict resolution, prepare for a successful career, improve grades and develop relationships with caring adults. These skills can be critical in helping youth develop in positive ways and to avoid behavior problems and conflict. Studies show that after school programs benefit youth at all levels, from elementary to high school. In fact, middle and high school students may often benefit most from these programs.”
